Natal Hypnotherapy for you and your baby

Hypnobirthing, Natal Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis for childbirth?

What's the difference?

There are many different terms that you may come across when looking for support during your pregnancy. Some are set processes and procedures and often part of a path of training or franchise agreement. Others will, like myself be trained in many different techniques and able to offer you a personalised programme of support.

When searching out information about Hypnotherapy for childbirth you can learn that it is a useful tool that can help you prepare for the birth of your child and manage labour. Rather than finding the experience stressful you can learn how to be more relaxed about it, and I also work with partners to help them relax and give you the support that you really need too.

It is completely natural as an expectant mothers to feel anxious about giving birth, and all that being pregnant entails. However feeling overly anxious and fearful could cause problems throughout the pregnancy and during the birth itself. Hypnosis techniques that can sometimes be known as Hypnobirthing techniques are designed to help address any fears or concerns that you may have and ease childbirth pain.

Research shows that hypnotherapy for childbirth can also benefit the baby. Some studies suggest babies born to mothers who have used hypnotherapy to prepare them for birth are more likely to sleep and feed better.

In 2011 the NHS sought to investigate in an 18-month study, the effectiveness of hypnobirthing. The idea, to reduce the financial strain on tightening NHS budgets caused by costly drug treatments such as epidurals — and also make births easier and safer for women and babies.

At present, 60 per cent of women opt for forms of pain relief which some professionals have blamed for everything from difficulties with breastfeeding to postnatal depression. More than 800 first-time mothers were recruited to take part in the trial, which was led by Professor Soo Downe, a specialist in midwifery at Central Lancashire University, at hospitals in Blackburn and Burnley.

How does it work?

You may have spoken to friends and family who have told you horror stories about what happened when they gave birth or during their pregnancy. These stories start to work on your mind and when you begin to worry and feel that things go wrong that stress can grow. By learning to be more relaxed and calm then those benefits will stay with you for as long as you want them.

Working in a calm and relaxed atmosphere I can teach you deep relaxation techniques which help you to remain calmer and more able to block out pain. Many people do not realise that you can turn down and manage pain but this is something that I do with clients all the time.

History

Hypnobirthing is based on the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, an English physician whose principles provided the foundations of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). In his book, Childbirth Without Fear, originally published in 1933, he controversially opened the debate on pain in childbirth and even questioned whether it exists.

Braving the wrath of mothers everywhere, he wrote: ‘In no other animal species is the process of birth apparently associated with any suffering, pain or agony, except where pathology exists or in an unnatural state, such as captivity.’

Dr Dick-Read went on to conclude that fear and tension was responsible for 95 per cent of labour pain, which could be eliminated through relaxation techniques. Hypnotherapy is simply a series of deep breathing and deep relaxation techniques which once learnt you can use to help ease yourself through your pregnancy and baby’s birth.

It is a skill like any other that gets better with practice, so that as you goes into labour it is second nature. I also use association techniques, where you can use a simple touch as the trigger to relax.
