    Hypnosis to stop Teeth Grinding

    hypnotherapy for teeth grinding rf

How can I stop grinding my teeth? It’s a question that I am often asked alongside people who come and see me with a fear of dentists. It may not surprise you to hear that fear of dentists is one of the most common fears and phobias!

I have written about both those things before and you can read all about hypnotherapy for fear of dentists here: https://www.markpowlett.co.uk/fearofdentists.html

One of the problems with teeth grinding is that it can cause jaw pain and headaches, as well as wearing down your teeth too.

What can I do to help stop teeth grinding?

The first thing to do is make sure that you see your dentist or your doctor. They need to take a look at your mouth and also what could be causing the problem. Normally people grind their teeth in their sleep and that pain of headaches and jaw issues can make your teeth more sensitive too. The technical term is bruxism and you need to take steps to stop it from causing you further problems.

Sometimes when you speak to your dentist they can fix a problem that may be to do with alignment of your jaw or teeth with a brace or other assistance. If medication is needed a doctor can prescribe this for you.

The role of stress and anxiety in teeth grinding.

It may not surprise you to hear that most people that suffer from bruxism grind their teeth because of stress and anxiety. If you are not dealing with the things that stress you in the day, then you may well not be sleeping well, and that grinding is one way that your body deals with it.

Hypnotherapy for teeth grinding helps you look at what could be causing that stress and anxiety and then deal with it. It’s about changing the things in your life that cause you worries and then learning to let go and relax.

Often just seeing someone to talk to makes a huge difference right at the start. Seeing a professional who is there to help you with no judgement or agenda other than just making sure that you feel better is always a good idea.

Once you start to learn how to let go of stress and those anxious feelings you can learn to sleep more soundly and awake feeling much more refreshed and ready for the rest of the day. When we deal with that root cause and you learn to relax and think about how you want things to be, rather than how you worry they may be you can be surprised at the difference.

So, make sure you see your doctor and your dentist regularly and if you would like to experience the benefits of hypnotherapy for fear of dentists, or hypnosis for bruxism then you can email me on [email protected]

Can Skype Hypnotherapy help with IBS Symptoms?

A new study has confirmed that having hypnosis on Skype can make a real difference to IBS sufferers.

The Study: Skype hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome: effectiveness and comparison with face to face treatment" is published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis

    ibs and hypnosis and hypnotherapy

The lead in the study is Professor Peter Whorwell, who is well known for his work in helping patients with IBS and for his advocacy of Hypnotherapy in helping to treat symptoms.  As many sufferers know stress and anxiety can make symptoms much worse and by learning to let go and relax at first, and then to imagine exactly how you want things to be in relation to your gut, you can make a real difference to your life.

So is Skype hypnotherapy an effective treatment for IBS ?

The new study is published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental HypnosisThis study was with 20 patients who had the hypnotherapy for IBS treatment via Skype and was led by Professor Peter Whorwell a gastroenterologist at Wythenshawe Hospital, The University of Manchester

As reported: “The patients in his study received 12 hypnotherapy sessions in total: the first was face to face with the remaining 11 sessions delivered via Skype. Before the treatment, 65% had severe IBS pre-treatment with the remaining 35% having moderate IBS. After the Skype sessions, 25% of were classed as having severe IBS, 40% moderate IBS and the remaining 35% mild IBS. All the patients enjoyed significant improvements in their IBS symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and bowel function. In addition, other symptoms commonly seen in IBS improved such as nausea, headaches, heartburn, low backache, constant lethargy, chest pain and bladder problems. Quality of life, and any anxiety or depression also improved.”

Interestingly when compared to an earlier study of 1000 patients who had face to face hypnotherapy at the clinic run by Professor Whorwell, the online treatment was only slightly less effective.

You can read all about Professor Whorwell and his work in much more detail here:

This includes all the information about how the NHS in the UK has conducted much more research than you may imagine.

How Could Skype Hypnosis for IBS help me?

One of the advantages of being able to work on Skype is that you can have sessions in the comfort of your own home. The worries about leaving home that can make things worse can be left behind. When I work with hypnotherapy to help people with IBS symptoms I always make sure that they have recordings that they can listen to at home. This can make a really big difference in the way that you are able to learn to let go, visualise and relax. In fact in the study just undertake it was noted that 71% of the subjects said they would not have been able to have the treatment if they needed to travel. This of course also helps more elderly clients who perhaps do not have the mobility of facility to travel as well as younger clients too.
